SANDPOINT — Since 2005, the non-profit organization Idaho Smart Growth has presented its Grow Smart Award to municipalities and individual projects, recognizing them for the part they play in creating vibrant communities.
This year, the Heartwood Center was presented with the award in the small community category. The volunteer jury of planners, architects and finance professionals that waded through the applicants apparently was taken with what the center has accomplished, since it splashed its picture across the cover and gave it a two-page spread squarely in the very middle of the program.

HWC receives Grow Smart Award
Idaho Smart Growth announced the names of the recipients of the 2014 Grow Smart Awards, and Sandpoint’s Heartwood Center, the renovated St. Joseph’s Catholic Church building, was one of the recipients.
Smart growth is a range of characteristics related to a community’s decisions about land use, transportation, housing, patterns of growth and development and the preservation of its cultural identity and natural beauty. Smart growth actions equally strengthen a community’s economy, environment and its citizens. Each year Idaho Smart Growth celebrates excellent examples of smart growth projects from around the state. Submissions are reviewed by a jury of experts and awards are given in a variety of categories – not always each year.
This year’s award categories and recipients are:
Community Excellence: 30th Street Cultural Arts Plan. An artist-led neighborhood plan for the city of Boise will help the West End build a strong cultural identity.
Green Building: CSHQA Boise Office. The architectural/engineering firm renovated an old warehouse into their LEED-Platinum-pending high-performance office space.
Commercial: 8th & Main Building. Downtown Boise’s most important and long-vacant corner is now home to Idaho’s tallest building, a mixed-use project with two levels of retail, internal parking and offices.
Small Community: Heartwood Center. A 100+-year-old former church in Sandpoint is preserved and gets new life as a civic center and community focal point.
McCall Downtown Master Plan Update. Resort community in southwest Idaho has a new plan for growing its downtown in a vibrant and pedestrian-friendly pattern.
Transportation: Moscow Intermodal Transit Center. North Idaho town builds transportation hub that makes connections among the downtown and the university, and accommodates pedestrians, bicycles, cars, vans and buses.
Mixed-Use: Owyhee Place and Owyhee Flats. Boise’s oldest hotel, from 1910, is renovated into a lively center comprising restaurants and other retail, conference spaces, offices and 36 rental apartments, while maintaining the historical design.
Charles Hummel Award: Jane Lloyd. This award recognizes personal integrity and commitment to smart growth principles. Jane Lloyd is a passionate civic advocate, leader, cultural and economic development ambassador and Idaho Smart Growth cofounding board member and tireless champion.
Idaho Smart Growth is a statewide nonprofit organization that brings people together to create great places to live. The 2014 awards will be presented at the annual Grow Smart Awards Celebration on Thursday, Nov. 13, at the McCleary Auditorium at Saint Alphonsus Medical System in Boise.
